2013 Year in review, Part Three: The Independents

2013 Year in Review
Part Three: Ring of Honor,
Dragon Gate and the Independents

Ring of Honor won't have any relevance nor will it be of real, comparative interest. Ring of Honor proved it was in no way a wrestling company at all. Taken on by the Sinclair Broadcasting Group, with lacking management of PR disasters, abusive staff and general barbarians on television, ROH has nothing to offer. Currently pinching talent and stars from elsewhere including popular Alex Koslov, AJ Styles and advice with booking ignorant Adam Cole, to the heavyweight title from Wrestling Wonders, the direction is clear. Picking up scraps from the table is a measly mistake. Those crumbs will not become golden nuggets. ROH needs to fire or dispel current problems, act fast and stop the 'I do what I want even if people are wrong' mentality. Such bad attention will always stain a mark on the company.

Lack of respect.
Cole as unconvincing champion in 2013.
Ring of Honor were in a bind. They needed to sell the company to someone who could distribute the airwaves. Facing problems with the now dropped internet PPV's for failure to understand how to conduct the procedure, Sinclair bought the show with the intent to gain more investment capital. That's fine, it's a business ideal. Though it has not had constructive management nor support in how to deal with mounting problems. Filled with scandals, abuse and allowance from management will always make ROH a non-entity. It will just be there in the mist. Somewhere to go when all other options fail. A stop gap come halfway house. Talent should avoid going there as much as possible, unless there is nothing else to do. That is its core being. Bookers at the time had to sell, but now, perhaps this is a lesson all can learn. The lesson being not to sell to the first buyer who comes along and promises an 'all teeth and suits' glory. This company is travelling down the TNA route of hiring anyone. TNA, has slumped to a categorical new low. ROH is following that trend in a drastic manner.

Dragon Gate USA in its failure to drop Johnny Gargano as champion proved the promotion is booked on a fan mentality based of promoters with talent adoration as friends and not fan audiences. Every booker needs a dependable mannequin, but in order to make a business and truly, a company evolve, strong options than just friends in the back need to be adapted upon. Over the two years as champion, the DG heavyweight title has not made any progress, and hasn't elevated the stage of Dragon Gate USA. In fact, after shining as a company in 2012, Wrestling Wonders recognised it as the top promotion of the year. Despite naming it the Promotion of the Year in the WW 2012 Awards, Dragon Gate has dropped the ball. With extraordinary talent on the roster, as well as some levels of ignorance, DG is one company that moves slowly and simply fades away in the background. It should be high value and yet it is simply surplus to requirements when everyone is bored of everything else. It is the last toy to be played with in the playpen. When it is used, this is only for passing time and no one really cares about it until they are re-integrated into the national promotions instead. Full of trust issues with questionable talents, Dragon Gate needs to think about company appeal and not a booker's friend to be carried for favouritism which devalues the industry. Counting the string beans will not make Jack's beanstalk rise. Ditch the cows, plant the seed, bloom with golden water. Lose the ego.

Tony Nese upholds strong
Indy scene foundations.
The real independent circuit is one that is very appealing. With likes of Christian York, Tony Nese and others the scene is looking rather handsome. With strong appeal, wrestling values and support in tow for fans and interaction, the shows deliver for attendees. The problem, as always, is that it is independent. While talent can make enough money on the scene to live a decent life, many leave the indy scene because there isn't much growth with career opportunities. This is no ones fault overall. This is simply the way it works. Fans go to indy shows to see pure wrestling without many, if any, storyline emphasis. Characters are welcome but story is not needed here. The formula cannot be changed as this offers an alternative when all else fail. How a star develops their career, however, is something that they have to contemplate themselves. The indy scene does however think cleverly on who it should book, rather than pick anyone. That is one of the key imperatives that keeps the scene flowing. Change that, and the beginning foundation of failure would rot the core fragments built upon.

Indy wrestling doesn't have and could require 'brains' in the sense of those individuals that can really drive something further. The only problem with this understanding is that the only people left in this bracket who aren't new, young or fresh for today's market are the older generation of 1980's wrestling. Hiring those to run parts of the background show mentality would be a pitfall for the scene itself. Choices must be logically thought out as to who could really help make it a rising, yet stable opportunity. We don't see anyone able to do this. Perhaps others can see one? Remember, you shouldn't just hire anyone who is a fan favourite or booking adoration.

Davey Richards: Shrewd, cunning and not retiring

Independent champion's trust issues
irk key industry players

Before 2012, Davey Richards was hailed by numerous 'insiders' and fan gossip writers infatuated with Richard's one spot moves, as the new star force of the wrestling business. A few years later, over the last two years, everyone's loveable smiley elven shrew surprised them all. Richards announced he would retire by 2014. he made previous statements in 2010 and 2012 of impending retirement only to resurface on the indy scene instead.  His aspiration to become a paramedic in America shocked the independent fantasy writers who adore Richards even spouting biased accounts to paint a glamourous picture on the blank canvas in the form of the 5 foot, 8 inch luchador.

After being burntout on the independent scene and irking several managerial forces in the booking and business committees backstage, Richards was recently dropped from his final match in homestay company Ring of Honor in December 2013. After venting his upset on social media, including his Facebook account, Richards scurried quickly to old booking friend Gabe Sapolsky, now in the wrestling company Dragon Gate for its USA franchise.
Aiming to be given favouritism on a recent EVOLVE card in January 2014, Sapolsky shocked onlookers by refusing to book the pintsized hunchback. Sapolsky, who has made some ludicrous choices that eat into the credibility of the promotions he operates under today within the last two years, refused Davey on a level of trust issues. Sapolsky said "I am a trusting person until I'm given a reason not to trust someone. 95% of the time that trust pays off as there are a lot of good, honorable people in independent wrestling. I like to think I have good instincts when dealing with people. I have worked on verbal agreements since 2002. When a man looks me in the eye and assures me of something repeatedly, I take his word on it. I don't advertise anyone or anything until I am 100% confident that they are committed. I take advertising something very seriously. I know when you buy a ticket to a show that you are spending your leisure time and money on us. You deserve to get what is promised to you. Now things happen. Planes don't take off. Wrestlers get injured. There are circumstances beyond our control when it is just not possible to deliver what was advertised. However, if it is humanly possible to make a show, I expect people to keep their word, especially when they have made countless promises and assurances to me spanning several months. Especially when they have expressed such a strong desire to move on from their old company and help build something new and have done this time and time again over months in many different ways.

Richards, certainly had scores of trust issues over the years, but the most recent debacle that took place involved a shocking revelation on an independent wrestling card in mid 2012. Richards had agreed to work a couple of matches on the circuit alongside working pals, Tony Kozina and Kyle O'Reilly. Wrestling company APW and wrestler/promoter Jaysin Strife also dubbed Richards and his partner at the time in mid 2012, Kyle O'Reilly, "thieves" among other strong language, available on our YouTube channel here Wrestling Wonders on YouTube . Such strong language means viewer discretion over 18 is advised. After being likened to scammers elsewhere Richards, who also appeared with a now notorious event in Iowa in which he was two hours late, demanded payment up front then stated they "forgot wrist tape" in their car, headed outside and left the venue.

Richards sent demands to have the card of the event changed to his liking with an 8 man tag instead of a 4 man tag, the following evening. Richards then bailed on the show, leaving the promoter to deliver the news on the evening's card to dismayed fans in attendance in 3XW. Being a world champion elsewhere, Richards felt the need too bargain the price tag further and demanded more income adding "Since I am champion, my price has to go up." After showing up at just before the main event Richards, with his teammates, aggressively requested their payment.

After taking it outside, thug Richards and pals challenged the promoter stating they will "kick your ass" of a 140 pound promoter doing his job. After smoothing over details, Richards and friends then agreed to work the main event for a reduced fee. Whilst changing in the lockerroom, Richards then adds he forgot the tape in the car as an accomplice loads their bags into the vehicle.

With his partners in tow, Richards then hurriedly ran outside the back door with Kozina driving the getaway vehicle, like something out of a real life action movie, taking $350 from the promoter, who paid out of his own finances and not the company's budget.  As Team Ambition the group were later branded #TeamBandit by wrestling fans for the sheer disbelief of obscene unprofessionalism involved.

Kyle O'Reilly quietly blogged his response, more of an admission, to the modern day wrestling heist.

"So we agreed to work a tag, Davey and myself against 2 of his guys, who I wont mention because after all the shit talking they’ve done in the last 24 hours they don’t deserve any more publicity. We take a pay cut, yet still enough to cover our gas and all of our food for the day, put our gear on, got paid and walked out the back door.

Was what we did wrong and unethical? Perhaps. Was what we did completely justified and reasonable? Perhaps. The fact of the matter was we felt disrespected and so “give and you shall receive”. The point being that sometimes you have to be the bad guy and stand up for what you believe in. I’ll be completely honest in saying the entire thing made me feel really uncomfortable and I felt a sense of guilt. Am I going to apologize? Absolutely not, because you have to live and die by the sword. Regardless of regrets, one must stand by their decisions and at the end of the day a guy disrespected two of my close friends that I look up to and that’s simply, morally wrong.

The majority of you reading this is probably in complete disagreement with me on the matter and thinks what went down in Milo, Iowa yesterday was a crime. Most of you reading this probably have a strong dislike for me, being my wrestling style, my selling, my promos and character ability (or lack there of) or just you know me and personally dislike me for whatever reason. I’m okay with that. Hopefully this whole incident won’t affect anybody’s desire to book me or Team Ambition. However, if it does that’s okay because I’m a man of honour and regardless of what you say or think I’m going to continue being the best possible professional wrestler I can be. I’m standing by the decision that was made whether I regret it or not."

Fans were so upset with such conduct numerous felt O'Reilly as his counterparts, had lost perspective and could only continue by riding coattails of other name worthy stars.

Social network Facebook was also inundated with messages in which the wrestling 'professionals' began verbally attacking fans. Richards later blocked comments to his Facebook account and even claimed he was hacked on Twitter before shutting it down. He returned with a new handle, current today.

Strifled
Richards then chose to adapt the situation in a work to gain bookings on the British wrestling scene.

Booker Adam Pearce also condemned the actions via Twitter with these statements.

@JaysinStrife I think anyone robbing anyone is a piece of s***. In or out of wrestling.

After seeing the footage, & regardless of why, what Tony Kozina did is reprehensible; totally classless. And I really respected Tony. #sad

@BJ_Whitmer As a vet, Tony has to be better than choking out a 16 yo kid, regardless of whether the kid belonged in the ring. Irresponsible.

Rewinding back to 2012, Richards was booked for the Best Of The Super Juniors card for New Japan Pro Wrestling. Richards, who claimed an injury permitting him unable to travel, he and then tag team partner Rocky Romero were instantly stripped of the NJPW Tag championships. Then the BOTSJ card followed. Richards appeared on the independent circuit some few days after the scheduled event took place in Japan. Feeling cheated and conned New Japan sent a clear message. Richards was soon barred from New Japan for the foreseeable future. Compulsive liar Richards, who then travelled the European markets making ignorant choices, whilst trying to fox promoters and bookers made them all finally realise they were being played.

In 2007, Richards was also accused by fans of spitting on them in the front row on several occasions.

Richards, who now has no options left but to try and be signed to a developmental contract with pal and tag partner Eddie Edwards with WWE onto its NXT brand is the only option available. He also implied in December 2013 after their first tryout they had pretty much sealed the deal adidng his time on the Indy circuit was coming to an end.

WWE are not interested in the small boys with Triple H focusing on strong tag team values, trust, commitment and overall star appeal. Richards offers no real standout qualities to the WWE system. Can such an amazing superstar who tells gigantic fibs be the main event headliner at Wrestlemania in five to ten years? WWE are correct on this decision but some are cautious as TNA are attempting to offer the pair a deal only to snub WWE. WWE should let TNA pick up the scraps. The company will run out of options for them as will the duo after their five minutes of fame are up.

Upsetting bookers, industry executives, owners and writers that can make careers is not a valid decision to conduct. After having done it all on the independent circuit, with nothing else to offer, Richards should focus on swapping the black curtain for a green one instead. As one of America's most caring professions, the medical board should consider its background checks more healthily with such negligence. When all else fails, who knows, Richards could appear in a guest spot as an EMT.

Mike Mondo: Fear the foxy caramel contender

Caramel contender has
hot apples to bake

Ring of Honor wrestler Mike Mondo plans to continue his path of unleashed mayhem on the wrestling scene. With “No Fear” the 30 year old grappler aims to become wrestling’s hottest new star.

He recently returned to Ring of Honor wrestling on March 18th 2012 in hot tag action with Michael Elgin against Adam Cole and Kyle O’Reilly displaying his unwaivering skills after a hiatus in his second coming returning to the mainstream platform of Independent wrestling. Billed by Mondo as giving him a “second chance” the bulked blonde hunk shone among competition and proved a tough challenge for any combatant to overcome. Mondo had already wrestled for ROH previously in July 2010 and in January 2004.

Fans will remember the former wrestler as a member of WWE’s Spirit Squad faction where Mondo became WWE World tag team champion from April 2003 defeating Big Show and Kane mostly alongside Kenny Dykstra as The Spirit Squad until November 2005 then bested by Ric Flair and Roddy Piper, in debunked rules where any two of the five man tandem could defend the titles. Mondo and Dykstra where mostly called upon to defend their honours credibly. It was here Mondo showed intense heart, character and skill, until the ball was dropped when other limited performers were deemed unfit to wrestle to an adequate standard leaving Mikey out on the shelves. Coming back from the cold Mondo resurfaced at Ohio Valley Wrestling, which had split from WWE as its official talent training facility.

Returning back at Ring of Honor from OVW, Mondo impressed over 2011 making the Wrestling Wonders Pro 50 at #49. Once on the radar Mondo retained and jumped up to #33 in the following 2012 rankings with an impressive Indy takeover. Mondo shot back in an assured 2012 that started re-utilising his edge with tense tussling and ground dominance on adversaries. “No Fear” Mondo held his own against competition whilst giving them tender challenges fans had no option but to endorse. Mondo also nabbed both awards nominated for in the WW 2012 Awards for Most Improved and Rileylicious.

'Nasty' Roddy gives us
a wonderful interaction
Mondo showed no signs of a shrinking violet and maintained his credentials over 2012 holding formidable battles with Matt Taven, TJ Perkins and Mike Bennett. Even locking horns with then television champion Adam Cole, Mondo had excellent outings as an in-ring tour de force. Destructive, warring and anxious, Mondo’s intensity rose to drive Ring of Honor to a new position of fan interactions and gather an influx of positive attentions for the company. On July 21st 2012 he even battled unadept ROH Heavyweight champion Kevin Steen for the title providing healthy competition, unsuccessful on that occasion, however launched further profile as a capable force.

Dependable talent Mondo continued strong TV title challenges until tragedy would strike. Gathering steam and becoming a true rising star, Mondo fell victim to injury. Devastated and supported by fans to regain his enthusiasm, Mondo returned from his October mishap on the 23rd February Psycho Circus show in New York City in three way action with winner Papadon and retiring legend Jerry Lynn, with action performed in a humble and endearing swan song of respect for Lynn and granted dignity to all of his valuable contributions to the sport.

Mondo came back at Honor, where he was interacting with SCUM’s Cliff Compton, Jimmy Rave, Rhett Titus and Jimmy Jacobs over April. Mondo has proven how to get back on the saddle and dazzle with his delightful demeanour, deltoids and dashing dexterity. Mondo planned to procure a victory in the 17th annual Super 8’s tournament on the 13th April 2013, won by retiring ace Damien Dragon.

Regardless of his previous beginnings in the early 2000’s, Mondo is back, poised and further determined to diminish all competition in his way to reach the top and grab all the accolades on offer. 2013 may just be Mondo’s year to hammer home a brand new influence in the wrestling spectrum to continue fan approval mirrored with belief of a new wrestling superstar on our very horizons. By 2014, Mondo could be the newest champion to surface on the Indy's as the most interesting choice to reshape a floundering outlook.

Ole! WWE hire El Generico

Generico contract leading way
for multiple influx?

WWE hasn’t officially signed masked wrestling superstar El Generico to a developmental contract as the internet marks have jumped on a false inclination once again with inaccurate details.

Generico has been spoken to and invited to take WWE’s rigorous medical tests, upon if passing will surely be signed, which everyone understands. Generico speaks a multitude of languages, which was said to be a tipping point for WWE’s worldwide scale. Generico has been told to and complied with cancellations of lined up events including PWG’s approaching weekend event. Previous deals with Kassius Ohno, Daniel Bryan and break downs such as Nigel McGuiness deals falling through are standard procedure before mass signage. WWE may remove Generico’s mask as a worker. This would be a mass mistake noted by the WWE Universe.

The soon to be signing comes as WWE plan to expand their developmental future, widely understood by Triple H. Head-hunter Tripper also plans to sign up numerous independent superstars previously eyed up years ago. Some of those include Sami Callihan and Adam Cole, who again, have been in WWE’s eyesight for numerous time and due to receive tryouts over January. More signings are expected over coming months.

Other stars lined up could include Roderick Strong, a bundle of divas, Mike Bennett and potentially former WWE Diva and Bennett’s girlfriend Maria, Shelton Benjamin, Alex Shelley and Brodie Lee among others. Bennett had his meeting/tryout last month.

WWE plan to considering calling up as well Ashley Flair and Paige to television.

Speculation also emerges WWE have considered signing model Kyla Cole.

John Morrison has also been assumed to return to the company after his contract expiration within a year and a half to two years. No word on Melina returning. He shouldn’t.

No word can be revealed on whether Max Waltham will sign.

Asked if WWE would re-hire others?

After being asked by fans from letters in email and social media, Wrestling Wonders believes WWE may re-introduced Maryse at the WWE 20th Raw anniversary show and has been in contact with her for a return at some stage. We wouldn’t be surprised if it made offers to Michelle McCool, Maxine and The Bella Twins. WWE have asked Trish Stratus to return, of which she declined. Lita is also in the frame. Batista is only a matter of time before an approach is made. WWE should re-hire Sylvain Grenier.

WWE’s attempt at creating a future because it neglected to make one is an upset and yet pleasing move that it finally looks to hire more capable stars, however, how much time has been neglected, and what of those stars still residing in WWE? The ‘E need to band them together than cause lockeroom conflict. Hiring certain people who bring others together to gain the best out of staff are sterling choices. WWE need to offer more than a few Indy stars and re-work the roster. It needs people to help shape them. Those individuals are just as technically priceless as the stars themselves to formulate a decisive future perspective.

Maria (Kanellis) manhandled

Maria Kanellis manhandled by
male fan at ROH house show

Former WWE Diva and Ring of Honor's "First Lady" Maria Kanellis vented her upset near two weeks ago at a ROH show when one fan in attendance, seated front row, took it upon himself to grope Maria's backside upon entrance to the ring.

Kanellis, extremely miffed, later responded that the man was a "pervert."

“Thank you New York for coming to see @ROHMikeBennett and myself. But the guy in the front row that grabbed my bum, I will have you thrown out next time. You are a pervert!!”

Dear Maria, allow me to explain for you why the perv grabbed your pert derrière. All females in sport, more so in wrestling have been sensationally degraded to one common denominator, all females are sexual objects, and onject alone. WWomen are regrarded as having no soul and only here to be touched and desired by men with o morals how o treat women and see them only as a heightened sexual object.

Psychology suggest Women, upon birth, are classed as weak. They cry or winge about the slightest thing, they are strategically designed to be less active and productive than a man. Man overpowers a female in every right. While this may be debated, in wrestling, this theory is put to the test in a positive light. Man presents females as sexual objects, with mass sexual degradery, favouring pert, model, enhanced "look" where most ladies spend eight hours in hair and make up to present that image on screen, where outside of the role, most are not like this.

Let us take WWE as a prime example of enforcing this behaviour. WWE's lead female, Kelly Kelly, whom the company feel is the number one portrayal of females, because she is thin, at an alarming rate, pert, blonde hair, and enhanced breasts to entice every man. Wearing a cajoled, little mermaid, loose fitted undergarments, many do not respect females because this portrayal of female, with no wrestling aptitude and the domineering force booking them feeling this is the drawing point of a female in a man's world, fans do not look at these women as such, they are viewed as "tits and ass." what else do they have going for them?

TNA arn't getting off scott free neither. The over sexualisation of the Beautiful People, with Velvet Sky and Angelina Love in very revealing outfits promoting they are practically prostitiues asking for it, sets an increasingly worrying tone, because, one day, some female at a wrestling show, will one day suffer the ultimate price, rape.

No one wants to mention such a drastic revelation, though this is what is impressed into the minds of fans watching or being there. With sexual tension and hormones flying all over a "red blooded male" who has since been stripped of his morals, is taught in his mind that the female is for him, and he can do whatever he likes to her. Supporting this, men in attendance will "agree" and adorn him in his grabbing of a female. Worryingly, society will do what it can to encourage this behaviour.

Therefore, the question is asked, is it not time pro wrestling finally books females in a light that is not fully sexual? Yes, females who cannot wrestle and disgrace the sport, like Kelly Kelly, have thier sexual appeal, everything in today's society, which is terrifying, is about sex, place Kelly and the others of that tone in roles that are specifically devised for tart-ism, and keep the rest, that can wrestle or contribute to the roles of valet etc, to further develop the ailing female divisions.

Many come to see females fighting passionately. Women's wrestling is an extremely lucrative market. This also supports females in the role of becoming stronger, "powerful" and having a general backbone. It also encourages females to be involved in sport.

The fan had no right to grope Ms.Kanellis, and should be ashamed, but he wont,  as any fan is never allowed to interpersonally touch any sporting superstar inappropriatly unless agreed or in light humour. as a blaatentl "cop a feel" these fans are out there, already having mass support saying "can't blame him for grabbing it" which, again sends the wrong messages. With no strong role models ever teaching anyone what is right or wrong, with the greatest media platform, a television, warping the mind of those watching, should be encouraged to stand up against and portray real morals to society that support females, instead of ripping the to shreds for the sake of a few dollars worth, and an expensive cost of personal dejectory.

Over the last week, WCW commentator from the past, Mark Madden, who is no credible source that the "online community" are latching onto because he was a commentator on WCW, posted jibes directed towards Maria and her new beau Mike Bennett, stating whether she missed former love CM Punk. Punk, now WWE champion, becoming the newest wealthy player in wrestling and WWE, had dated Maria before his rise to championship fame in his ECW days of WWE's re-branding takeover. Madden targeted Bennett in order to stoke a fire in a detrimental way. Mike Mondo also became involved, to which he stated support to his Ring of Honor co stars.

ROH crowns new champ, previous Injured!

Kevin Steen defeats Davey Richards becoming sixteenth ROH Heavyweight champion

So it’s all change at Ring of Honor this month. Many developments have occurred.

In early May, Davey Richards was ROH champion until suffering a car accident forced ROH to shift the title to its new and current bearer, Kevin Steen.

Kevin Steen has managed to become the sixteenth ROH heavyweight champion in its history. Steen successful won the title at the Border Wars iPPV on May 12th in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

ROH did not change the status of the card previously advertising the match, where speculation from fans was rife. With Richards removed from the NJPW Junior divisions annual upcoming tournament, after awaiting full confirmation, leaving the name up on the tournament (and time to find a replacement should it be true), fans were unsure if this was a work and having heat on him.
Oh, what a beautiful picture... :)
Hold me instead!

Richards was planned to defend the Junior IWGP tag championships with partner, Rocky Romero, though forced to vacate those also.
Rocky Romero, 2012, as NJPW Jr Tag Champion

Richards has been replaced by Brian Kendrick for NJPW. Steen has removed the title from him too.

Richards has legitimately received injury and is recuperating. WW sends their well wishes to you.
Until then however, now as new champion, Steen, victorious on May 12th, is set to collide in his first defence against Eddie Edwards on June 15th in Charleston, West Virginia.

In further revelations, Steen has suffered a concussion after his title win over the past weekend from the 18th – 20th May. Should we have more details, we shall update, though it does not seem encouraging for Steen’s first defence and new exposure as champion. ROH are hoping this injury is minor.

State of the stars, Part Three : ROH, DGUSA & NJPW

State of Ring of Honor

Ring of Honor has expanded its outreach through TV and capitalising on the online streaming concept with internet PPV’s. So what can the current stars do to make ROH stand stronger against competition?

DAVEY RICHARDS

Current champion has earned his right, however has neglected fans with holding the title after he gave his speech causing defragmentation between the audience claiming there was no competition, and possibly doing a ‘CM Punk’.

It also highlighted the issue that Richards, claiming there were not competitors to “outwrestle” him, cast a dreary eye on ROH and its future.

Richards himself needs to now create opponent for himself, or he will have no further options, even if he is at the top wearing the title, while visiting Japan, England and the rest of the world, as potential substitutes.

Is now sidelined in an unfortunate, impromptu accident causing injury (further article to come soon.) Best wishes from WW go out to you. X

EDDIE EDWARDS
The little man won the big title, only to lose it and seem inferior. Edwards was ROH’s only other title challenger after the destruction of Roderick Strong as a result.

Edwards, winner in the WW 2011 awards for Most Improved and Match of the Year (with Richards), proved he has the potential to carry the company and gain audience along with that. Now back into his old position before the title was held, Eddie is stuck. He now needs to be built further and pushed hard as competition along with two or possibly three others, in order to create a pool of selection all battling at one time.

RODERICK STRONG

Sacrificed to Edwards for the world title, Strong became the guy who now has no role and is jobber-esq, after being raised as World champion, which is shambolic.

Strong should have remained in the background as title contender. This is what ROH must re-invoke in order to maintain someone who stood at the top, then dropped for a maximum impact collision between two friends, in hindsight, forgetting about all else in the company.

ADAM COLE

One man fully neglected by ROH over the course of 2011 with a string of losses, still delivered when required and made #43 in the WW Pro 50.

Cole shortly after, broke partnership with Kyle O’Reilley as a tag team, which was gathering intense momentum with the masses. Both Cole and O’Reilley were booked to support world title options and develop other superstars stories to coming PPV’s than their own.

ROH need to give Cole a solid push, as the fan base is there for him.  Cole is someone with a fresh, new and intriguing style. With a ladies man look and some taking a fancy to him also, Cole is one to pursue. Needs to be earmarked to TV title level at least.

KYLE O'REILLEY

Split from partner Adam Cole as Future Shock causing ripples in the ROH tag division.

Either needs to re-join with Cole to rip the tag division apart, or be rebuilt as a buff stud with the green tights and sweaty beefcake who can go with length in matches. O’Reilley needs a strong backstory to why he is in a match with a challenger and the reason be crystal clear to audience to emotionally invest.

MICHAEL ELGIN

The stronghold of ROH, coming into his own with leaps and bounds, should definitely be given a further future in three months’ time or so. Big matches with stipulations to build his character and level in the company will not go a miss. Is the one to watch.

MIKE BENNETT

Everyone’s cutey pie with a potential mean streak has brought his first lady of ROH, Maria Kanellis along with him. Together there are many options, though many claim Bennett does not fully respect the sport, company or its journey in deliverance on screen with values. Bennett will need to learn how to control, respect and deliver if he is to go further. Though from last year’s record, Bennett, at #37 in WW Pro 50, has been given more than enough respect from ROH in order to do this.

KEVIN STEEN
Losing Steen for the best part of a year was a bad slump for Honor. Time was there to create a few stars in order for Steen’s impending return to set the stage ablaze for audience.

Upon his return, Steen was stuffed in the middle of Edwards and Richards after their world title match at Final Battle in December.

Most fans only watch for Kevin Steen, which now says much about the promotion, and what it needs to achieve in order to drive audience back in.

Steen reinvigorates fans, though most instances are of “Hardcore” value. Steen needs to add the wrestling more fluently with that if he is to become a potential, serious contender, which he clearly can attain.

As you may see, Kevin Steen is now the new ROH Champion.  (See further article in couple of days.)

EL GENERICO

The flying Luchador s classed as never having one bad match in ROH. While this may be true, Generico is not viewed by the company, who must acknowledge that to have sterling matches in everyone he enters, should be respected for being able to deliver and be over with fans.

Generico should be supportive in TV title and tag matches, before eventually winning one with further style, in which he can add his own character onto it, and done in a way where Genny wont be obvious to which title/she could be lined up to capture. An air of mystery in matches can add to the style of the flying superhero.

RHETT TITUS AND KENNY KING

Forming the ANX, Titus and King have clearly created their place in tag wrestling. This team are talented, strong and have longevity if done correctly.

The pairing must remain for a while. Like Haas and Benjamin (see below) if either or both went separate ways, there would be no place for them a singles competitors right now, as the roster is overwhelmed with that.

Though neither need to part from one another. No other company has a strong tag division, and ROH have that strength in these two teams.

SHELTON BENJAMIN & CHARLIE HAAS

Both support the tag team division perfectly. While both are able to hold their own in singles, for now, the pair are needed in the tag team line.

Feeding off one another with sheer grandeur, Haas and Benji bring back wrestling and tag principals that create a division of numerous tag teams in the sport and indeed company where all else have failed to create a division.

JAY BRISCOE & MARK BRISCOE

Though everyone raves of them, the Briscoe’s have done it all in ROH. Seen as outlandish thugs or daredevil nutcases, that is the only real angle they have left to play out. Singles cannot be supported by either of the two, though Mark is actually the unconsidered one of the two that would be most successful.
The Marty Jannetty/Miz concept applies. Of the Miz/John Morrison team, Miz became the Shawn Michaels of the two.

JAY LETHAL
Constantly kept as a structured support system, Honor hasn’t got someone to best him on level, example being the US TV title, though Lethal will not move above mid-tier. This is fine, because Lethal is making a consistent level of mid-tier. While Lethal may want higher, as proven in TNA, fans don’t see him a viable upward option, while disheartening for him, he can be left to shape the division he is in very well. Companies need all areas taken care of, and this makes for an integral cog in the wheel. At some point, however, ROH will have to drop Lethal to competitors, while allowing Lethal to work a challenge (and feud) with them.

ROH's state is interesting. It could have the potential to add altenative dimensions. It has the potential to stand strong above, next to and eventually over TNA IF ROH decide how to move forward with bold decisions than easy ones. This takes more than placing a title onto a new star. ROH need to add a further dimension to it's edge, as currently, it is a alternative movement that provokes a rebel cause to WWE, but after a PPV or month long run, most are drawn back to the big league by default because ROH drops its ball in how to function fully. Again, though, it has potential to stand up if it can make decisions, but with its limited independant capital, Honor may need to branch out on a business and investment level, as it has cpabale talent and now needs to move further up the pecking order if it is to be something more than just on the sidelines.

STATE OF DRAGON GATE USA

CIMA
CIMA is the staple of DG USA. The main focal point is for a reason. He knows how to wrestle, lead from the front and command the situation involved in, and though unfortunatley sidelined with a neck injury, this now gives a chance for two factors - CIMA's hungry return, as well as having new stars leading at the front to initiate a return on impactful reclaiming of the top dog position with a well structured feud to further to the company.

RICOCHET

Continual improvement, high flying daredevil manoeuvres and a passion for the business, ‘ochet has years ahead in the sport. One of the key standpoints for the company, adding youth and skill with such expert deliverance, the young breed has placed its promotion worked for in a very supportive state of positivity gaining ticket sales and narrative design with in ring style. Has more to learn, meaning his potential, and for the company also, could eventually become explosive in many more years down the line.
BxB HULK
Kicking out former stable mate and leader of the Blood Warriors, CIMA, Hulk could be stepped up to a leadership/virtuous advisor role with serious technique in ring to back this up. Feuding with company favourite CIMA is not out of the question. Both could have a lengthy series that would deliver prestige, intent and structured design with a tint of mayhem to create an explosive standpoint in the industry and create a feud of the year, which would also gain DG USA further notoriety and mainstream coverage as an entity in wrestling’s walls of ‘American-ism or ‘Hollywood-isation.’
JOHNNY GARGANO
Sheer aggression, attack and mat expertise make Gargano an interesting addition to the squadron of DGUSA. Able to stand among the Japanese factions of wrestlers there and add a continental American flavour proves Gargano is more than just a demographic to please, and is supported by the rest of the roster on their own merits also.
As recent champion, Gargy holds the title with a certain level of maturity and company projection that draws and audience further into emotional investment. Company made a careful and solid choice to place the championship onto him with an insight to a future. Has not been a disappointment since. Cutting the ponytail also, and those snazzy tights add volumes evermore.
SAMI CALLAHAN
With his goon character coming over towards then of late last year, Callahan has impressed the pro wrestling world for what he can do. At his smaller size of 5’5”, Sami has devised an interesting style, partnered with working stiff and able to gain severe emotion in his match outings.
Has made the wrestling industry look up at what he can deliver. How he maintains this over a year or more will be maintaining his heat generously, slowly and tentatively to give a little, and get a lot. Rushing would ruin.
UHAA NATION
The comparison to Ezekiel Jackson and Bobby Lashley may be there, however Uhaa is the big bulked behemoth who can move swiftly in parts, and knows how to launch himself over the top rope accurately onto opponents to back up the dominant attack/s.
With a power monger who can learn, in time, to become fairly fluid and keep up with the rest of its roster, Uhaa won’t seem to be perceived as behind the times and on equal standing.
How he adapts to retain both together is down to him.
CHUCK TAYLOR
Serious intent and immense potential as a performer on all levels is able, with and without partner Gargano to deliver sweet, fun and powerful promos that connect to the audience. Taylor has a level of style that penetrates opponents to deliver a quality match, filled with unpredictable design, yet enthusing through the match time scale.
Taylor gained #39 in the WW Pro Wrestling 50
An aerial astronaut who commands the air, with fair vocals, always improving and a connective level of crowd interaction, DG USA has earmarked a powerful addition to the roster for further overall company growth.
JON DAVIS
Surprised fans don’t support him; there is no social investment into the character of Davis. Most view him as bland, a bore or just there to prop up the company walls as a bookend. If he wants to become a pillar to that community, Davis needs to project a style rather than a routine.
ARIK CANNON
Cannon’s brawler and Hardcore ethics have been fused together with basic timing and short match participation, in terms of overall appeal, however, has his place to structure the company in doing so.
While it is minimal compared to all on the roster, how Cannon can improve is to gradually add further intensity to a few ground holds to add a handful of areas of wrestling/Hardcore/brawling behaviour, that will eventually open up eyes further to him.
Taking slow time to grow overall will benefit Cannon, rather than throwing everything at him to develop in one year, which is not possible for anyone.
AR FOX
Another high flyer, though not the typical fit able to adapt and continue with wrestling levels to create fair to solid matches in formation. Daredevil he may be, though Fox is slowly becoming a name in singles matches.  Able to encorporate those swift moves with height and devastation in sell, Fox has certainly gained an interest from fans. Being capable to turn those connective shots with a power manoeuver.
RICH SWANN
With a Japanese style and training supporting his motion, Swann has quickly become one of the company’s most intriguing stars. With his agile line and ability to irk fans with cowardice while maintaining star aura building a level of story and match outings to compliment his repertoire add motion to his presentation as a force to possibly be reckoned with. Could add stability to mid card levels.
BRODIE LEE
Dragon Gate may now lose one of its stars to count on, after WWE have pursued interest.
MASAKI MOCHIZUKI
Veteran unshy to commit, Mochizuki epitomises wrestling values. With the look, style and in ring capabilities Masaki is one that can still go, help others and get himself over in roles he portrays well that connect with audience on certain levels.
PAC
The best highflyer in the business adds differentiation to the sport and match prowress. Able to wrestle credibly also, PAC has been in title races and continued success with the promotion. PAC needs, however to combine the flying with ground work more fluently to establish a further basis to the company, and then PAC can become a major player in the business.
LOW KI
Back as Low Ki, has regained his fallen respect that WWE tore off of him. Options in WWE there were, but unutilised correctly allowed him to be snapped up by the promotion who have secured his assets that audience receptiveness latches onto. Respecting Ki’s momentum, maturity in wrestling and his all-round passion for the work, Ki has risen highly to gain a following that creates a place for DG and its audience to shape the format.
AKIRA TOZAWA
Surprising delight in change over the last year for the industry, Tozawa bcame a maniacal monster that provided a tough backbone instead of his favoured comedy performances in the past. Tozawa proved he can re-define his role upon command and make it look expert. 2012 could be interesting for him once again, though currently is in a strong position all round.

GAMMA
Recently gaining title success, Gamma has received a nod of appreciation. DG respects its workers and Gamma creates a different, entertaining and heartfelt standpoint to the sport. Gamma has potential to rise atop in his own level, whilst also supporting tag groupings whether leading or a part of.
As a former leader, Gamma can lead others as well as himself. Having stars who know roughtly where they can go off script adds to the way forward for any wrestler re-creating a place in a small knit community.
DRAGON KID
Ever developing and growing in name and appearance, Dragon Kid is slowly but surely climbing ranks. Again, though, this one should not be rushed and allowed his time to go along slowly, yet always has pace when carrying out his lines of action and storyline feuds.
MASATO YOSHINO & NARUKI DOI

Both supporting the tag division fruitfully, both are able to rebuild this area successfully with guided direction and written procedure. Changing the script in the ring, allowed by them, will add to both in unison.

YAMATO
YAMATO is an all rounder. He can use submission, be a part of a group and pair in tag matches. YAMATO is able to fit anywhere DG need him. While this is helpful to the company to rise above, work together and become competition to others, while creating DG’s own exclamation point is key. Though it does not mean YAMATO needs to take a lesser role. Though for now, if DG want to become a promotion that can challenge other’s well, it may need its lieutenants in place to work together and YAMATO proves he is one of many who can support roles and create an outstanding display while doing so.
The State?
Dragon Gate USA, to everyone’s surprise, is the only true contender to adding competition to WWE. While it is in ‘small’ stages currently, DG has powerful points to deliver. With wrestlers that can fly, submit, add power and define story and key vignettes, this promotion has the level of magnitude to break out through WWE’s stale downplay and typical repetitive angles.
One ‘problem’ DG does need to consider as to why it isn’t fully as high as it could be is for one reason. DG has quality Japanese or Eastern wrestlers, while they add to the design, fans are fickle. Most have also grown up accustomed to the WWE way. How you get the organisation over without seeming to be overly ‘Japanese orientated’ and add in touches of Western culture to fuse the two together, more wrestling fans will join the movement, which will then become a statement, following to a standpoint. Fans can only take so much in visual aspects.
DG can easily stand strong among ROH and possibly work up to the number two promotion over TNA, which is lacking organisational direction.
If Dragon Gate get it ‘right’ they will be on course to make a statement for wrestling in the coming years as a promotion filled with interesting and must see, exceptional talent.
NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING (NJPW)

HIROSHI TANAHASHI
Holding the heavyweight title for a record 404 days has only helped Tanahashi prove his core strength, all round talent and heavyweight diffinity. New Japan have allowed him to shape, define and add prestige to the title, the company and his talent, while also supporting others, in what has been instant classics and long-time memories for the company to proudly speak of.
Tanahashi proved his finest work over 2011, earning he #1 wrestler in the WW Pro 50 – WW Pro Wrestling 50 and Wrestler of the year in the WW 2011 Awards
Tanahashi is set in NJPW walls as a strong and esteemed rival that can work well in any capacity and shine the wrestling business as beautifully as his talent.
PRINCE DEVITT
New Japan made sure it put Devitt at the top of its priorities list, and that priority has payed off. Devitt commands the arena, supports in tags and upheld the honour of the IWJP Jr heavyweight championship. Now without it, Devitt is stronger than ever thanks to his style, deliverance and respect for the business. Dev is one of the top players in the company AND the industry, and now holds high value to anyone he works for, with and against. One of the toughest to defeat on a level, NJPW gave him the correct time and support in achieving this global representation. He got NJPW noticed.
KARL ANDERSON
Now without Giant Bernard (Lord Tensai), Anderson has disbanded with his former Bad Intentions partner, both who won tag team of the year at WW Awards, 2011.
Will have a tough test to remain over, though as a built bulky bear who is beefy and mighty, New Japan should focus on Anderson favourably, to regain some Western culture to infuse with the eastern area in order to build bigger audience and reputation. Gaining more followers who appreciate wrestling will benefit all involved in the long haul.
KAZUCHIKA OKADA
Was the man who claimed the win and gold over Hiroshi Tanahashi, now credited with destroying his impressive streak no one else could do. Increasing his weight size to enter the heavyweight division proved successful. Not only wearing the most prized and respected trinket in the promotion, has taken ‘Hashi’s streak away and now has a high playing field to set his superstardom on.
HIROOKI GOTO
Supporting the mid level tier honourably while on standby for the heavyweight division is pleasing for direction. Given a chance, Goto can elicit emotional response, regardless of good or bad decisions enforced by Goto as a character.

MVP
Maintained the best comeback of his time leaving WWE to gain further experience and respect his dreams in Japan.
Seeing MVP in the cup challenges and coming out of them in  further knowledge with revernance in prolific standing, whether a win or a loss, MVP can support the walls of NJ’s infrastructure.
KUSHIDA
KUSHIDA is another guy NJ can capitalise on. While growing ever more everyday in roles given to him, he is able to deliver great matches with the correct opponents. Being the supportive shield for now, KUSHIDA could eventually in a couple of years work higher up the card with an augmented place among the talent on the roster to add his own placing on any card. Till then, should support and grow the brand further.
ROCKY ROMERO
Supports the tag team scene and occasional junior heavyweight division. Needs further star power to get across, however and needs to be given a strengthened new angle to characterisation to relate to his wrestling skill set he chooses to use. Both must flow together to gain further fan base.
RYUSUKE TAGUCHI
Taguchi compliments tag wrestling well, allowing NJ to hold on to the division if they can deliver quality match booking and angles that influence and encourage fans elsewhere to stand up and look in. Along with Devitt, Taguchi becomes ever more powerful with him by his side. Though when without Taguchi can support on his own to form a good match with others.
YUJI NAGATA
Must learn to work less stiff and protect opponents from injury than shelve them unintentionally. Nagata should remain in tournaments and build the roster up, while gaining some momentum himself, whilst learning to work fluently and capable with the rest to enhance them all.
TETSUYA NAITO
Pushed into and propping up around the heavyweight title scene is encouraging for him. Naito can deliver a new outlook to the company as a challenger to the Japanese market, while casting minimal eyes from the West, though it is a small start that creates the biggest opportunities.
JUSHIN LIGER
The New Japan legend continues to draw audiences in. While humorous, and having a unique look and style, Liger knows how to wrestle fluently and get over while encouraging audience response for or against. Always a joy to watch with intrigue.
LANCE ARCHER

Wasted in WWE whilst an chance to do well as Vance, Archer now heads up the tag team areas once more in NJ. Alongside colleagues who can work with him and learn further enhancement to wrestling, Archer has options to grow over time, where NJ should slowly but steadily do so if they want a tag team option for the future.
MASATO TANAKA
Propping up the Intercontinental side whilst participating in the tourneys and some tag matches proves this thirty-nine year old veteran has no chance off playing down any time soon.
Embodied with working others to great matches and keep company faith, Tanaka holds a profile that categorises class and value to the honour of the sport.

The State? - New Japan hosts incredible wrestling with some of the most productive and powerful grapplers in wrestling principals, however fails to catch the wider audience West-side.

In order to cpture those fans, NJPW needs to branch out, which is is trying to encorporate with the tours of America, Mexico and Britain. Though a greater step of faith is needed, NJ have managed to delegate stars correctly in prjection, the struggle it faces, again, is to captivte the fickle western, hollywood-ised, consumeristic style defining their culture. When an alternative is provded, fans wake up and take notice.
